About the Geeks for Social Change Community
Who are we?
The GFSC Community is an infrastructure organisation that supports the people, grassroots groups and community businesses trying to build an equitable and survivable world.
Lots of people want to make ethical, meaningful, creative and socially valuable technology and design but lack access to capital, social networks, project mentoring, and job opportunities to do this.
Currently this means left-tech projects struggle to become sustainable. Lots of people are stuck in corporate jobs they don’t enjoy or think are worthwhile, struggling for employment at all, or have their political beliefs unrealised.
We are creating an infrastructure support organisation to help people doing this work by creating:
- Properly managed and curated online discussion spaces (Discord and email lists) that act as an “on ramp” to get people into a wider community
- Regular community events that share materialist left wing and anarchist ideas and highlight and promote the people doing the work to create a liveable future
- Support people running small community projects to get access to a wider network of volunteers, capital and interest without having to do it themselves
- Work together to attract investment for projects too onerous or ambitious for us to get individually
What is this blog?
The GFSC Community Blog was set up by Dr Kim Foale in Jan 2025. It is run by a collective of people doing radical things with technology, and using technology to do radical things. Our goal is to create a shared space that can be used to boost all our profiles professionally and personally.
Our focus is on the doing, recognising that the left is very critique-focussed. We want to be primarily a community of do-ers, showing what we’re working on warts and all and encouraging others to join in.
Our explicit goal is to work to create post billionaire technology: infrastructure owned and operated by communities themselves for the mutual benefit of their members. We will aim to embody these principles in building our own project.
Content we want to make:
- invite people on to tell us what tech they use and what works/doesnt work
- deep dive into a tech methodology
- lets fix a bug / write a feature together
- workshops on using certain techs
- news from the week
- PlaceCal / TransDim project updates etc
- Watch a youtube together
- Write or edit a wikipedia article or do some #visiblewikiwomen etc
- Design a thing e.g. some BDS or Trans Liberation stickers
